Landlords on Zillow are practically begging with free rent

Original version ·

Turns out building a million identical 'luxury' apartment complexes actually forces landlords to compete. What a concept.

A massive construction boom has left some US cities with way too many empty apartments. Now, landlords are sweating and trying to figure out how to pay their mortgages without actual human tenants.

According to Zillow, nearly 40% of rental listings are offering sweet move-in deals, like a free month of rent or waived deposit fees, just to get bodies in the door. They built the supply, and now the demand is making them play nice.

Of course, this isn't happening everywhere. Anyone trying to rent in New York or LA is still paying with their soul and a kidney. But in the places where developers actually went crazy with the cranes, the tables have finally turned.

It turns out the magical cure for insane rent prices wasn't corporate greed lectures, but just building some damn housing.
