Zelensky and Trump to meet in NYC: Can they actually deal?

Original version ·

Buckle up, because the world's most high-stakes political meeting is happening on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this week.

It looks like Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump are sitting down in New York to try and hash out an end to the war. Trump has been sending his guys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, to play shuttle diplomat with both sides lately. Now, the main event is set.

Zelensky is calling this an important conversation, pinning his hopes on the idea that this meeting could shift the entire trajectory of the conflict. Meanwhile, back on the front lines, things are anything but quiet, with massive drone strikes and ballistic missiles flying over the weekend. The real kicker is that everyone is negotiating while the bombs are still very much dropping.

Marco Rubio, acting as the state-side hype man, described the recent envoy visits as substantive and meaningful, which is basically D.C.-speak for, 'we have no idea if this is working yet but please don't yell at us.' It seems the goal is to find a path to peace that doesn't just look good on a press release.

Diplomacy is officially the new extreme sport.
