Why everyone is ghosting their family lately

Original version ·

It’s not some sudden social epidemic—it’s a massive culture clash over what actually makes a family worth keeping.

Turns out, the reason so many people are cutting off their parents isn't just about childhood trauma or some TikTok trend. It is a kinship culture clash. On one side, you have the old-school idea: family is a permanent, unconditional hierarchy where you obey because you share DNA. On the other, people are treating family like marriage—it has to be built on mutual respect and safety, or it just doesn't work.

We are moving from "compulsory kinship" to something more democratic. If you can fire your boss or dump a partner, people are starting to ask why they have to keep toxic relatives around just because of a bloodline. It’s not about having less family, it’s about choosing a family that actually treats you like a human being. The bloodline is just the starting point, not the contract.

Genetic relation is being downgraded from a requirement to a suggestion.

Honestly, best decision I ever made. Turns out life is a lot lighter without mandatory misery.
