West Bank chaos: Settlers on the warpath and the IDF is doubling down

Original version ·

What started as a deadly skirmish has turned into a region-wide rampage, and the government's solution is looking more like gasoline on a fire.

A group of settlers strolled into a village claiming to be on a hike, and things went south instantly. Six people ended up dead, including two soldiers. The IDF is now planning a major operation, while settlers spent the weekend torching homes and farms across a dozen other villages.

Bezalel Smotrich is already calling for the evacuation and demolition of entire villages to get rid of what he calls terrorist infrastructure. Benjamin Netanyahu is backing him up, promising forceful steps and even more new farms in the area. It feels like the whole region is holding its breath waiting for a complete blow-up.

When the government treats arson as a valid policy tool, the law stops being a thing that matters.
