Delcy Rodríguez thanks Trump at the UN while democracy stays on hold

Original version ·

Things in Venezuela just got weirdly cozy with Washington, and it's leaving everyone wondering what exactly is going on.

So, Delcy Rodríguez stood up at the UN and basically sent a thank-you card to Donald Trump. It’s been a while since Nicolás Maduro was dragged off the stage by US forces, but don't expect a sudden pivot to a normal election schedule anytime soon.

Rodríguez is out here promising Venezuela will eventually have elections and reform its institutions. The funny part? She won't say when. Meanwhile, opposition leader María Corina Machado is literally getting blocked from even landing in the country. It’s hard to rebuild trust in institutions when you can’t get your political rivals to actually show up.

The vibe shift is real. Trump and Rodríguez are now bonding over energy deals and security, proving that oil reserves remain the ultimate diplomatic lubricant. A UN watchdog says the repressive state machine is still humming along just fine, but hey, at least everyone is talking about AI now.

Nothing says democratic transition quite like thanking the guy who just took out your predecessor while keeping your own opposition stuck in transit. Let that sink in.
