The country has been trapped under heavy U.S. economic sanctions for nearly a decade. Now, a group of American lawmakers is demanding that Donald Trump lift restrictions and unfreeze foreign assets so relief can actually reach people.
Their argument is simple: the quakes were acts of nature, but the crippling sanctions preventing recovery are entirely man-made. Throw in recent military strikes and the detention of former president Nicolas Maduro, and Washington basically claims to run the place while refusing to let it rebuild.
Running a country by proxy turns out to be much easier when nobody expects emergency aid to actually get delivered.
