Caracas gets hit by a double-whammy earthquake and the numbers look terrifying

Original version ·

Mother Nature just threw a terrifying one-two punch at Venezuela, with back-to-back massive earthquakes hitting right near the capital during a holiday.

Imagine chilling at home on a holiday evening, only for a massive 7.2 quake to strike. And then, before anyone can even process what is happening, a 7.5 monster hits exactly 39 seconds later. That is the nightmare Venezuela is dealing with right now.

The double temblor turned concrete buildings into rubble, split roads wide open, and knocked out power across parts of Caracas. Even the national headquarters of the Red Cross got critically damaged, leaving rescuers to figure out logistics on the fly.

While the initial official death toll is in the dozens, the USGS warns there is a terrifying 44% chance the fatalities could ultimately top 10,000. Rescuers are digging through concrete dust in the dark, trying to beat the clock.

Nature does not care about national holidays or geopolitical crises.
