Valar Atomics wants to drop 450 nuclear reactors in the middle of Utah

Original version ·

Because one nuclear reactor is clearly for cowards, this startup is aiming for a record-breaking fleet in the desert.

A company called Valar Atomics has decided that 9,500 acres of public land in Utah is the perfect spot for a massive science experiment. They are proposing to install over 450 small nuclear reactors to juice up a giant data center.

The sheer logistics of plopping down nearly half a thousand reactors on public soil sounds like a plot point from a dystopian sci-fi novel that gets cancelled after one season. It turns out that powering the next wave of heavy computing requires more energy than a small country, and apparently, the desert is just waiting to be turned into a giant battery farm.

Bureaucracy usually moves at the speed of a sloth, but it will be interesting to see if this gets the green light or if it stays a fever dream of venture capital ambition.
