US strikes Iran and kills oil waivers after shipping attacks

Original version ·

The fragile peace deal between Washington and Tehran just lasted about as long as a New Year's resolution.

So, here is what happened. We had this shiny new memorandum of understanding signed back in June, and everyone was pretending we were on the road to peace. But then, someone decided it was a great idea to attack three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Naturally, Washington didn't just send a strongly worded email.

Instead, the US military just blew up over eighty targets in Iran, hitting everything from air defense systems and radar sites to dozens of those speedboats the Revolutionary Guard loves to use for harassing tankers.

To make things even more awkward, this whole fireworks show happened right while Tehran was holding a massive, week-long funeral for their late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Talk about timing. On top of the airstrikes, the Treasury Department instantly revoked the waivers allowing Iran to sell its oil and petrochemicals. Basically, the economic chokehold is back on.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is hanging out in Turkey at a NATO summit, probably watching the chaos unfold on his phone, while Iranian officials are crying foul, claiming the US is "bullying" them and violating the peace agreement.
