It looks like the Pentagon’s war on drug boats has a serious collateral damage problem, and a top Senator is calling them out.
So, the US Southern Command has been busy playing battleship in the Caribbean and Pacific, sinking boats they claim are packed with drugs. But after peeking at some classified files, Tim Kaine (male) says the math doesn't quite add up. The military appears to be killing people who have absolutely nothing to do with the drug trade.
We are talking about fishermen just trying to make a living, or people simply heading home. Gustavo Petro (male) is already calling it murder after one of his citizens got caught in the crossfire. Meanwhile, the whole operation costs hundreds of millions and hasn't actually stopped a single gram of cocaine from hitting the streets. It’s basically a high-seas tragedy disguised as a law enforcement operation.
Apparently, the official excuse for being in an armed conflict with cartels covers a lot of questionable behavior. The government would prefer to keep the details of who they are allowed to blow up under lock and key.
