America’s murder rate is quietly plummeting toward a 125-year low
Turns out people are mostly staying in and behaving themselves, and criminologists aren't entirely sure why.
The Council on Criminal Justice ran the numbers across 36 major U.S. cities, and the results are surprisingly chill. The national homicide rate just dropped another 18%, putting the country on track for its lowest murder levels since 1900.
Carjackings plummeted by a massive 47%. Over in Lincoln, Nebraska, homicides literally fell by 100% compared to 2019 levels. The only crime category showing a consistent upward trend is drug offenses, which climbed 12%.
The wild part is that nobody can single out one clear reason for the drop. It's happening in progressive strongholds, conservative hubs, cities cutting police budgets, and places hiring more cops alike. Macro-level societal shifts seem to be doing the heavy lifting all on their own.
American crime is apparently fixing itself, and researchers are mostly left standing around scratching their heads.
