Why firing a tech-bro minister sparked Ukraine's biggest protests since 2022

Original version ·

When Volodymyr Zelenskyy axed his drone-obsessed defense chief, he accidentally ignited a generational civil war over how to win.

Firing your tech-savvy defense minister mid-war sounds like office politics, but in Ukraine, it just triggered the country's largest protests since Russia invaded. Mykhailo Fedorov was the young disruptor pitching drones instead of meat-grinder tactics, complete with heavy Silicon Valley energy. Then he ran straight into general Oleksandr Syrskyi, the old-guard commander who prefers traditional attritional warfare.

When Fedorov got booted, people took to the streets. It turns out Ukrainians are exhausted by forced conscription and draft raids, and a recent survey showed over a third of citizens rank internal government corruption around mobilization as a crisis equal to or worse than Russian military aggression. A massive majority also flatly rejects drafting younger men.

Even while under martial law, Ukrainians are refusing to pause democracy or shut up about government overreach for the sake of unity.

Winning a war on the front line doesn't mean much if you lose the country you're actually fighting to preserve.
