UK defense chief John Healey resigns over military budget cuts

Original version ·

Nothing says "we're ready for World War III" quite like your own defense secretary rage-quitting because the treasury refused to buy enough ammo.

So, John Healey, the British defense secretary, just threw his hands up and walked out. And he didn't go quietly. He basically posted his resignation letter on X, telling Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the UK’s military budget is dangerously low and leaving the country unprepared for, well, anything.

And he wasn’t the only one. Hours later, his deputy Al Carns packed his bags too, followed by a parliamentary assistant. The military requested $37 billion to upgrade their drones, submarines, and ammo stockpiles, but the government is reportedly planning to hand over only about half of that.

Starmer is trying to play it cool, saying he’s "proud" of their funding plan and immediately appointing Dan Jarvis to fill the empty chair. But this is the second major cabinet member to bail on him recently, right after the health secretary quit.

It's bold to prepare for a "new era of threats" with a 50% off coupon.
