Donald Trump Rolls Out the Red Carpet for Xi Jinping

Original version ·

The tarmac at Joint Base Andrews just got a whole lot more crowded and significantly more awkward.

Donald Trump decided to skip the usual formalities and went straight for a full-blown red carpet production for Xi Jinping. We are talking B1 bombers doing a flyover, a cannon salute, and a massive honor cordon. It is a level of pageantry that is supposedly rare for a reason.

While the band played the national anthems, the mood in Washington was far from harmonious. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are fuming, questioning why a leader who has been accused of aggressive posturing gets a royal welcome while actual allies are getting hit with trade threats. Whether this is high-stakes diplomacy or just a bizarre photo op, nobody seems to be on the same page.

Watching a red carpet get rolled out for a rival while the Senate floor is effectively on fire is certainly a bold political choice.
