Trump says Ukraine can build Patriot missiles, forgets to tell the manufacturers

Original version ·

So, Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky just had a chat at the NATO summit, and Trump dropped a casual bomb: he wants to license Ukraine to build its own Patriot air-defense missiles. Sounds great, right?

Sitting next to Zelensky in Turkey, Trump announced that "a little birdie" suggested letting Ukraine co-produce the incredibly complex, multi-million-dollar Patriot interceptors. He promised the US would show them how to do it, adding, "you'll figure out the complexity quickly. That's pretty cool."

But here is the absolute peak: Trump casually admitted he hasn't actually informed the actual defense contractors who build the systems, namely Lockheed Martin and RTX Corp. But hey, in his words, "that'll work out all right." Imagine being the corporate PR rep reading that news on your morning scroll.

To be fair, Ukraine desperately needs these. Between Russia's relentless airstrikes on Kyiv and a severe global shortage of interceptor missiles, local manufacturing would be a game-changer. But setting up a high-tech missile factory in a country actively being bombed is slightly more complicated than a "pretty cool" handshake deal.

Hopefully someone remembers to send an email to the engineers before the blueprints get mailed out.

sure, let's just build a high-tech aerospace facility under active drone strikes. super easy, barely an inconvenience.
