Trump’s Massive Ego-Arch is Finally Breaking Ground
Forget the lawsuits and the historic views—Trump is pushing ahead with his 250-foot monument to himself, regardless of what the law says.
It looks like the Trump administration is moving forward with its plan to build a massive, 250-foot-tall arch in Washington. Even though they’re still tied up in court and haven't actually received the necessary approvals, crews are expected to start digging at Memorial Circle within the next two weeks.
This thing is going to be more than double the height of the Lincoln Memorial, which is basically the architectural equivalent of putting a giant billboard in your neighbor's yard. Critics are pointing out that it will completely block the view of historic landmarks like Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial corridor. The administration is currently ignoring the fact that they haven’t received congressional authorization to even start, let alone build the thing.
The government's own parks service even admitted that this project would have an adverse effect on literally every important historic site nearby. But hey, apparently being the most powerful capital in the world means you get to prioritize a giant concrete ego-trip over legal procedure.
A monument to one's own greatness is apparently the ultimate historic preservation project.
