Trump threatens to tear down the Kennedy Center over name drama
Washington just got a lot more dramatic, and now one of the city's most iconic buildings is facing a very strange ultimatum.
The Trump administration is officially playing hardball with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In a court filing, the government argued that if they aren't allowed to renovate the building—and slap the Donald Trump name on the front—they might just have to knock the whole thing down.
According to the Department of Justice, the site is currently an "embarrassing" and "structurally unsound" mess. Their solution? If they can't get their way, they’ll just clear the lot for an outdoor amphitheater instead. It is apparently much cheaper to maintain, even if it doesn't quite honor the late president.
The board members, who were personally chosen by Trump, are insisting that his personal brand is the only thing keeping the place from a total financial death spiral. They even proposed a new, slightly lengthy name for the venue: "The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump."
It is truly a bold strategy to save a national landmark by threatening to turn it into a pile of rubble unless the signage is updated.
