Trump Administration: Let Us Rename the Kennedy Center or We Bulldoze It
The Department of Justice is officially playing hardball, suggesting that if President Trump isn't allowed to put his name on the building, it might just have to go.
In the latest episode of Washington-style hostage negotiation, the Department of Justice basically told a federal court that the Kennedy Center is a death trap unless President Trump gets his way. Apparently, the only thing keeping this landmark from being structurally unsound and embarrassing is the urgent need to slap a new, much longer name on the facade that highlights President Trump.
The current standoff involves a board hand-picked by the President, who insists that donors will only open their wallets if they see his name on the marquee. The DOJ even helpfully suggested that if the renovation project gets blocked, they could just tear the whole thing down and build a nice, cheap amphitheater instead. Naturally, they claim this is all about preserving the President's unique construction expertise.
Nothing says fiscal responsibility like threatening to demolish a national monument because you're losing a branding dispute.
