Trump Wants to Tax Canada for Blowing Smoke Across the Border
Just when you thought trade wars were about lumber and dairy, wildfire smoke enters the chat.
Hundreds of active wildfires are burning up north in Canada, and the wind is dumping a thick layer of haze across a dozen US states. Naturally, the proposed solution isn't sending more firefighters.
Instead, Trump announced on Truth Social that he wants to slap extra tariffs on Canada to pay for the "filthy, polluted air" invading the country. He claims the Canadians are guilty of willful negligence because they aren't properly clearing out brush and managing their forests.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney didn't directly address the tariff threat, gently pointing out that fighting climate change is everybody's problem. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court already ruled earlier this year that unilateral president-declared tariffs aren't actually legal, but that's never stopped a great rant before.
Taxing the actual atmosphere might be a bold new frontier in international diplomacy.
