Trump Fixed His Ad Scandal by Accidentally Admitting to Another Violation

Original version ·

So Trump got caught using taxpayer cash to air dramatic campaign commercials, and his fix was essentially admitting to an entirely different legal violation on camera.

For days, Americans watching prime-time football and news broadcasts were treated to cinematic, black-and-white ads where Trump warned about a "final battle" against a "sick political class." Tucked in the corner was the disclaimer: "Paid for by the U.S. government." The White House argued this was merely a non-partisan public service announcement teaching citizens to love their country, comparing it to vaccine awareness drives.

When ethics watchdogs pointed out that diverting roughly $20 million from Homeland Security for personal political vengeance ads violates federal law, Trump waved it off as totally normal. To make the noise stop, he announced that his super PAC, MAGA Inc., would take over the bill.

The problem is that federal candidates are legally barred from coordinating or controlling super PAC money. Yet, instead of letting lawyers handle the spin, Trump told reporters that he personally decides where every single cent goes, calling it "my money that I control."

Cleaning up an illegal government spending issue by publicly confessing to illegal campaign finance coordination is certainly a bold legal strategy.
