Trump wants to turn the Strait of Hormuz into a toll road
Just when we thought global shipping couldn't get any more dramatic, the US is blockading the world's most critical oil passage — and there might be a cover charge.
The US military is back to blockading the Strait of Hormuz, which is great news for anyone who loves high oil prices. But Trump has a fresh business plan for this particular geopolitical hotspot.
During a casual morning call to Fox & Friends, Trump floated the idea of the US taking over the strait completely. Not just policing it, but actually running it. His proposed title for America's new role? The "guardian angel of the strait."
And because angels don't work for free, the US should start charging wealthy nations a toll to pass through. Apparently, we are no longer just a global superpower; we are a maritime parking valet.
Naturally, Iran is thrilled about this. They control the other side of the waterway, through which a fifth of the world's oil flows, and have already warned that trying to turn their backyard into a toll booth will set the entire region on fire.
Selling subscription-based access to international waters is certainly one way to handle the national debt.
