Trump pulled a classic spy-movie switcheroo leaving Turkey
Turns out the press corps were just glorified extras in a high-stakes shell game while Donald Trump slipped out of town.
When Donald Trump left Turkey last month, the media was herded onto Air Force One, fully expecting to fly home with the President. They spent the flight chatting with staffers, completely unaware that the man they were there to cover wasn't even on the plane.
Instead, Trump had secretly hopped onto a smaller, unmarked aircraft as a precaution against threats from Iran. It is basically the presidential version of the "decoy cake" trick. While reporters were busy eating in-flight snacks, the real motorcade was already long gone.
It is a bold move, and honestly, kind of hilarious that the administration managed to pull off a literal shell game with a 747. Even George W. Bush went dark after 9/11, but at least he didn't trick the press into flying on a giant hollow prop.
Being the leader of the free world apparently comes with a side of professional gaslighting.
