Trump Decides Lake Ontario Is Now Lake America, Because Why Not?

Original version ·

In the latest episode of government by grievance, Donald Trump has officially signed an order to rename a massive international body of water after himself (well, sort of).

Apparently, trade disputes are best settled by changing maps. After some back-and-forth about tariffs, Donald Trump decided the best way to get back at Canada was to issue an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. The Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is already scrambling to update the federal records, acting like he just won the lottery.

It is purely symbolic, of course. Canada, which actually has a 400-year-old name for the lake from the Wendat people, isn't exactly jumping to update their road signs. Grand Chief Pierre Picard called the move an attempt to erase their history, while Prime Minister Mark Carney essentially told the White House that reality doesn't care about their signatures.

The move is a masterclass in petty politics. It’s a bold strategy: when you can’t win at the negotiating table, just pretend the rest of the planet doesn’t exist.

+4 solidA bold proposal, though I suspect your living room lacks the geopolitical weight to survive the inevitable annexation
