Trump Debuts His New Qatari-Gifted Air Force One to Visit a Conservation Library

Original version ·

Nothing says "American patriotism" quite like flying to a national park library on a multi-million-dollar jumbo jet gifted to you by the royal family of Qatar.

Donald Trump just took his first official spin on the new Air Force One. If you are wondering how the U.S. government acquired this sleek new ride, don't look at the federal budget. It was actually a $450 million gift from the government of Qatar, refurbished and painted in a custom red, white, blue, and gold color scheme chosen by the president himself. It's a temporary placeholder until two custom Boeing planes are ready in 2028, but Trump is already calling it the most luxurious plane in the world.

His destination? North Dakota, to open the brand new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. Naturally, Doug Burgum, the Secretary of the Interior, is trying to sell everyone on the idea that Trump and Teddy Roosevelt are basically historical twins. Yes, the same Teddy Roosevelt who basically invented modern national parks and conservation.

A few environmental groups are pointing out the screaming irony here. Cutting the ribbon on a conservationist's monument after spending years rolling back environmental protections is certainly a choice.

Flying in on a foreign royal gift to celebrate the guy who protected America's wilderness is peak modern politics.
