Trump pivots to Jay Clayton as FISA spy powers collapse
Just when you think the Washington circus has run out of clowns, they pull off a spectacular double-somersault into absolute chaos.
So, Trump wanted to put Bill Pulte in charge of national intelligence. Who is he? A guy with zero intel experience who runs the federal housing finance agency and spends his time investigating political opponents and complaining about mortgage fraud. A natural fit for managing top-secret operations, obviously.
Congress looked at this and completely lost it. They got so mad they literally voted down a temporary extension of FISA — the critical law that lets the U.S. spy on foreign threats. And because it was Thursday, they immediately packed their bags and went on recess. They literally turned off the country's premier spying powers, shrugged, and flew home.
With the spying law expiring on Friday and everyone on a beach, Trump scrambled. He dumped Pulte and nominated Jay Clayton, the former SEC boss and current federal prosecutor. He is actually a real, respected lawyer, which is a wild change of pace for this cabinet.
National security is currently on pause because the government had a massive tantrum over a real estate guy trying to play James Bond.
