Trump Promises $90 Checks: The Latest Entry in a Long Paper Trail

Original version ·

Apparently, the mailbox is about to get a visit from the government—if history doesn't repeat itself again.

Trump just announced that 20 million seniors are getting a $90 check to help with Medicare costs. The money is coming from a fund that has been sitting around since 2008, so it is not exactly new cash.

The kicker is the track record here. This is at least the fourth time in recent years that a multi-thousand-dollar payout has been dangled in front of voters, only to never actually materialize. From stimulus checks to dividend promises tied to Elon Musk's department, the math has yet to hit a single bank account.

It is certainly an optimistic way to kick off the final stretch of an election cycle. The promise is out there, and now everyone gets to wait and see if the checks actually clear or if they just join the collection of theoretical money that never made it to the bank.

this is just insultingly small change for the cost of living right now.
