Trump's New Tariff Wave Hits Latin America—And It's Getting Messy
Washington just slapped new import taxes on 18 Latin American countries, claiming it's all about forced labor.
It feels like the trade war manual just got a massive update. Donald Trump has officially kicked off a new round of tariffs, hitting 18 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. Depending on where you live, you are looking at either a 10% or 12.5% surcharge on your goods.
The U.S. government is framing this as a moral crusade against forced labor. But Brazil isn't buying it. Lula basically called the whole thing a protectionist smokescreen, and when you stack this on top of their existing duties, some Brazilian exports are facing a staggering 37.5% tariff burden.
Meanwhile, Mexico is keeping its cool, banking on existing trade deals to keep most of their exports duty-free. Chile is trying to argue their way off the list, insisting their labor standards are totally fine. It is an expensive, messy geopolitical game of chicken where nobody really knows who blinks first.
Turns out the fastest way to become a global trade pariah is to tell everyone you are just doing it for their own good.
