How to pass a massive US housing bill: just wait for Trump to ignore it
America just got a major new housing law because Donald Trump literally couldn't be bothered to sign it — or veto it. He just let the clock run out while posting on Truth Social.
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act is now officially law. It is a massive, surprisingly bipartisan deal designed to make housing cheaper and, wilder still, ban private equity firms from buying up single-family homes.
But it did not get a grand White House signing ceremony. In fact, Trump actively refused to touch it. Why? Because he was throwing a tantrum that Congress wouldn't pass a completely unrelated election bill he wanted. So he declared the housing bill "a yawn" and sat on it.
Under the rules, if the president doesn't sign or veto a bill within ten days while Congress is in session, it automatically becomes law anyway. Elizabeth Warren wasted no time rubbing it in, tweeting at 4 a.m. that the clock struck midnight and Trump couldn't stop it. Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson tried to play cool dad, explaining that the president has "a lot going on" and probably hadn't even read the bill.
It turns out the easiest way to solve the American housing crisis was simply letting a president get distracted by his phone.
