Trump Cancels Clayton Hearing, Holds FISA Hostage
Everything in Washington is now a transactional mess, and the latest political game of chicken involves national security and voter IDs.
So, Donald Trump has decided that if he can't get his way on a voter ID bill, nobody gets their national security surveillance programs either. He just pulled the plug on the confirmation hearing for his pick for national intelligence director, Jay Clayton.
The logic? He is refusing to move forward until his personal lawyer, Jamie McDonald, gets confirmed as a U.S. Attorney. Essentially, he's holding the intelligence agency appointment hostage to force a local legal appointment through. Meanwhile, the current acting director, William Pulte, gets to keep the chair warm while juggling a mortgage finance agency, because why not?
It is a classic Trump-style standoff where national security laws are just bargaining chips in a fight over who controls the legal system in Manhattan.
Apparently, the business of the entire country is now just a series of leverage plays.
