Trump just cleared the board at the federal election commission

Original version ·

If you're stressed about the upcoming midterm elections, don't worry: the federal agency responsible for making sure voting actually works now has exactly zero people running it. Problem solved!

So, Trump just fired the remaining members of the Election Assistance Commission. Yes, the entire board. There were three people left. He fired the two Democrats, Benjamin Hovland and Thomas Hicks, and let the Republican, Christy McCormick, politely resign. Since the other Republican commissioner quit back in April, the seat count is now a perfect, pristine zero.

This agency was set up back in 2002 after the whole Florida hanging-chad disaster to help states secure voting systems and run smooth elections. Now, months before the midterms, it literally cannot make any official decisions because there is no one left in the office to sign anything.

Naturally, Democrats are losing their minds, calling it a blatant attempt to hijack the midterms, while voting rights groups are pointing out that you can't really secure an election when you've fired the security guards.

It is certainly one way to streamline the democratic process.
