Trump Kills the Rule Capping Methane Leaks From Oil and Gas

Original version ·

Remember when keeping potent greenhouse gases inside the pipes was a legal requirement? Good times.

Trump just announced that he is "terminating" a Biden-era regulation meant to stop oil and gas companies from leaking methane into the atmosphere.

Methane traps absurd amounts of heat compared to standard carbon dioxide, but apparently forcing energy operators to find and plug leaks was just too burdensome. Instead of enforcing airtight pipes, the plan is to let drillers vent the gas freely without federal micromanagement.

The atmosphere gets the extra heat, while drilling outfits get to skip the repair bills.
