Trump wants to delete race from the census because history is apparently optional
The Trump administration is looking to scrub race and ethnicity questions from the national headcount.
For over two centuries, the U.S. Census has been keeping tabs on who actually lives here. It started as a way to calculate representation and, historically, to keep certain groups off the map. Now, the Trump administration thinks we should just stop asking about race and ethnicity altogether.
Pretending we are all a blank slate doesn't change the demographics of the country; it just makes it impossible to see them. It is a bold strategy to address systemic inequality by simply removing the box where people check off who they are.
It is definitely one way to solve a math problem: just burn the paper it is written on.
