Trump freezes housing bill over unrelated voting law fight

Original version ·

Imagine getting a massive, rare bipartisan win that could actually lower your rent, only to watch it get held hostage for a completely different political fight. Classic Washington.

The United States has a tiny, minor problem: it is currently short of about seven million affordable homes. But for a brief moment, a miracle happened. Congress—which usually cannot agree on what day of the week it is—actually passed a massive housing package with overwhelming bipartisan majorities.

The bill was designed to cut through local bureaucracy, jumpstart development, and put a leash on massive corporations buying up single-family homes just to jack up rental prices. It passed 85-5 in the Senate and was sitting on the desk, waiting for a signature.

Then Trump logged onto Truth Social. He announced he is refusing to sign the housing bill until lawmakers pass the SAVE America Act, a totally separate piece of legislation that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote.

The catch? Republicans do not actually have the votes to pass that voting bill right now. So, the entire housing package gets to sit in limbo while everyone plays political chicken.

Because nothing says "solving the housing crisis" like making sure nobody gets a home until some unrelated political leverage is secured.
