Trump slapped a 25% tariff on Brazil because of a presidential grudge match

Original version ·

If you had "trade war sparked by a jailed foreign ex-president's coup trial" on your bingo card, congratulations. You win.

The US just hit Brazil with a massive 25% tariff on almost all its imports. Officially, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says it's about unfair trade practices like ethanol and intellectual property. But if you look past the boring paperwork, this is basically a high-stakes geopolitical telenovela.

The real drama is the ongoing feud between Donald Trump and Brazilian President Lula da Silva. Trump is incredibly protective of his close ally, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup after losing his election. Trump previously called that trial a "Witch Hunt" and demanded it end immediately. When Lula didn't budge, the threats started flying.

First, there was a wild attempt at a 50% tariff that got blocked by the Supreme Court. So, the administration spent a year "investigating" trade policies and came back with this 25% penalty instead. This means American consumers get to pay a quarter more for Brazilian coffee, orange juice, and steel, all because two presidents can't stand each other.

Lula immediately pointed out that the US actually enjoys a $424 billion trade surplus with Brazil over the last 15 years, making a retaliatory trade war seem a bit like shooting oneself in the foot. He's already preparing to hit back with reciprocity laws and WTO complaints.

It turns out the easiest way for a country to get slapped with US tariffs is to prosecute its own politicians for trying to overthrow democracy.
