Trump May Bench AG Nominee Todd Blanche Until Opponents Leave Senate
Donald Trump has a classic workaround for Senate confirmation trouble: just wait out the guys voting against him.
Trump was facing a math problem in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Two outgoing Republican senators, John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, refused to vote for his Attorney General nominee, Todd Blanche. Their beef? A proposed $1.8 billion fund for supporters and Jan. 6 rioters, plus concerns over tax settlements.
Instead of picking someone new or fighting for votes, Trump suggested simply withdrawing Blanche temporarily and re-submitting his name after the two senators leave office in 157 days. In the meantime, Blanche gets to keep running the Department of Justice as acting AG anyway under federal vacancy laws.
Political opposition gets much easier to deal with when your opponents have a firm expiration date.
