Trump is back at it, trying to rewrite the birthright rulebook again
Because one loss at the Supreme Court wasn't enough, the administration is taking another swing at the 14th Amendment.
So, Donald Trump Trump just signed two new executive orders to try and kill birthright citizenship. You might remember the Supreme Court already shot down his last attempt, but apparently, they’re just warming up. This time, he’s explicitly targeting so-called birth tourism, claiming that wealthy foreigners are basically buying their way into the country.
The orders aim to block citizenship for the kids of foreign agents, terrorists, and—well, a pretty broad list of people the administration finds inconvenient. Trump’s take? He thinks the constitution was only ever meant for the children of formerly enslaved people, which is certainly a take. He’s basically trying to bypass the 14th Amendment via a signature on a piece of paper, despite the fact that the highest court in the land already told him that’s not how this works.
It’s a bold strategy to ignore a court ruling from, like, five minutes ago.
