Trump Cuts Beef Tariffs to Make Your Burger Cheaper
Beef prices are through the roof, so Trump is opening the floodgates on imports to see if that fixes the dinner table.
Inflation has been doing a number on our grocery bills lately, with ground beef prices hitting levels that make you second-guess that backyard cookout. Donald Trump decided he had enough of the status quo and is waiving tariffs on a massive pile of imported beef for the next 90 days.
The plan is to bring in hundreds of thousands of metric tons of beef, with the vague promise that it’ll hit shelves at 25% below current market prices. It’s a classic move: flood the market to force the price down. He hasn't told us exactly who is supplying this meat or which companies are supposedly agreeing to take a haircut on their margins, but the goal is clearly to get the cost of a burger back to earth while the local herds have time to recover.
Not everyone is cheering for this. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association is pretty much fuming, claiming this is going to hurt local ranchers and kill any chance of long-term stability in the market. It turns out that when you mess with the supply chain to score a quick win on food prices, someone’s always going to end up with a steak-sized headache.
Government intervention in the meat aisle is now officially a thing, and it’s going to be fascinating to see if the price at the register actually drops or if the discount just vanishes into thin air.
