Ternus is a 25-year company veteran who previously ran hardware engineering. While Cook will stick around as executive chair to handle global politicians and board strategy, Ternus gets the hard job: convincing everyone that Apple can still innovate instead of just selling the same sleek slab of glass every autumn.
His trial by fire arrives almost immediately at the upcoming launch event for the new iPhone and Apple Watch lineups.
Stepping back to let someone else take the heat for product launches while keeping the board seat might just be the smoothest exit in corporate history.
