Tibetan activist self-immolates outside UN headquarters
A man dressed in traditional robes set himself on fire in Manhattan to protest China's occupation of Tibet. It's the ultimate, tragic form of protest when the world looks away.
So, a Tibetan activist named Lobga Rangzen just went to the ultimate extreme right outside the UN headquarters in Manhattan. He set up a Tibetan flag, dressed in robes, and set himself on fire in broad daylight.
First responders got there with extinguishers about a minute later, but the damage was done. He died shortly after at Bellevue Hospital.
Why do this? Because China just passed a new "Ethnic Unity" law. Sounds nice and cozy, but human rights groups like Amnesty International say it's actually legal cover for forced assimilation. It basically forces Tibetans to strip away their language, culture, and identity to blend in with the dominant culture.
This isn't an isolated incident. Since 2009, nearly 160 Tibetans have chosen self-immolation. When global diplomacy is too polite to mention occupation because of trade deals, people resort to becoming human torches just to get a headline.
Nothing says "successful ethnic unity policy" quite like people choosing to burn themselves alive on the streets of New York just to be heard.
