So, a federal court in Tennessee just gave the green light to a new congressional map that effectively slices Memphis into three different districts. The result? The state’s only majority-Black district is gone, chopped up like a Thanksgiving turkey.
When voters sued, the court essentially shrugged. The judges argued that there wasn’t enough proof that the map was drawn to hurt Black voters based on race. Instead, they reasoned that because city dwellers tend to vote Democrat and rural voters lean Republican, slicing the city into thirds is just smart, standard political strategy to guarantee a GOP sweep.
Basically, the court decided that if you’re trying to rig a map for your party, it’s not discriminatory—it’s just business as usual. As long as the math works for the candidate, the impact on actual representation is just a side effect that nobody has to worry about.
