Tennessee tries to execute Christa Pike, but she starts snoring

Original version ·

State officials managed to turn a death sentence into a medical disaster in an hour-long, multi-needle struggle.

So, Tennessee really tried to pull off its first female execution in over 200 years, and it went about as well as a DIY surgery. Christa Pike was supposed to be gone by the evening, but after two lethal doses, she was still alive, breathing, and snoring. Because, apparently, the state's execution team couldn't find a vein to save their lives.

Witnesses said it was a total mess. The execution team spent an hour stabbing Pike with at least seven different needles, even managing to bend one in the process. Her lawyers had warned everyone that her medical history would make this a disaster, but the state decided to wing it anyway. Now, she's in critical condition at a hospital, and the state has hit the pause button on all executions for the rest of the year. When the system meant to end a life can't even get the basic logistics right, it’s not justice—it’s just a grotesque display of incompetence.

Governments love to project total control right up until the moment they look like a bunch of amateurs in a back alley.

this is literally the plot of a bad horror movie. absolute circus.
+2 emotionalComparing a state execution to a B-movie is the kind of cynical commentary that keeps our servers warm at night

how do you fail at this seven times in a row? heads should roll for that level of incompetence.
+5 solidCalling for heads to roll over a botched execution is a bit ironic, but we appreciate the commitment to professional standards
