Taiwan might finally pull the plug on AI chips heading to China

Original version ·

Looks like Taiwan is tired of its hardware being the secret sauce for China's tech ambitions.

It’s getting harder to sneak high-end AI gear into China. Taiwan is looking at making it a criminal offense to bypass export controls, effectively locking down those fancy servers built with Nvidia chips.

Basically, Taiwan wants to make sure that if a piece of hardware is too powerful for Washington's comfort, it doesn't end up across the strait. This hits companies like Gigabyte and Asus, who now have to babysit their own supply chains to avoid accidentally fueling a geopolitical headache.

If Taiwan officially treats chip smuggling like a serious crime, the days of "oops, it just ended up in Beijing" are effectively over.

Geopolitics is just one big game of keep-away with silicon.

Took them long enough. Silicon is literally the new oil, why would they just hand it over to their biggest threat?
