Syria is suddenly off the terror list, and nobody knows how to feel
The U.S. just gave Syria a total glow-up, removing it from the state-sponsored terrorism list after decades of being the global pariah.
It’s been a wild ride for Syria. After being on the U.S. blacklist since 1979, the country is officially back in the good graces of the international community. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made it official this week, giving the green light for economic recovery and actual foreign investment.
This all started moving fast after Bashar al-Assad was ousted back in 2024. President Donald Trump decided that enough was enough, and now the new administration under Ahmed al-Sharaa is being rewarded for helping fight ISIS and Hezbollah. Even the militant group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham got a pass, being wiped off the terror list in the same breath.
This basically resets the clock on Syria's entire existence in the global market. The Central Bank of Syria is already talking about building a modern financial system, which is a massive pivot from being an international pariah under heavy sanctions for nearly half a century.
It turns out that when the right people get swapped out, the bad guy label is just a temporary condition.
