Susan Collins Just Torpedoed Todd Blanche's AG Path

Original version ·

Getting confirmed as Attorney General is tough enough without your own party pulling the pin on your nomination grenade.

Trump's former personal defense lawyer Todd Blanche was gearing up to run the DOJ, but Republican Senator Susan Collins just officially stepped in to say absolutely not.

Her list of grievances reads like a greatest-hits compilation of wild department moves: approving a $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded payout fund for Jan. 6 defendants, trying to indict six Democratic lawmakers over a speech, and cutting deals that shield Trump's family businesses from audits.

With Democrats united in opposition and Collins defecting, Blanche can now afford to lose exactly one more Republican vote before his confirmation collapses entirely. All eyes are suddenly on the few remaining undecided moderates to see if the whole thing blows up on the Senate floor.

Having your own party's moderates reject you for the nation's top law enforcement gig because you act too much like a personal fixer is quite the resume milestone.
