Supreme Court Is Back: Guns, Voting Fights, and Oil Giant Lawsuits

Original version ·

The nine justices are back from summer break, and their inbox is already a complete disaster zone.

The Supreme Court just clocked in for its new term, and there is zero warm-up period. Right out of the gate, local towns in Colorado want to sue ExxonMobil and Suncor for climate damage. Justice Samuel Alito had to bench himself on day one because he literally owns stock in about two dozen energy companies. Classic.

Next up is the recurring classic: voting rules. The Republican National Committee wants Arizona to force people to show strict proof of citizenship before registering, backed by Donald Trump's pet obsession with non-citizen voting.

Then comes the big one: the justices will officially decide whether local bans on AR-15s violate the Second Amendment. Gun lobbies claim semiautomatic rifles are an inevitable American birthright, while lower courts have repeatedly pointed out that battlefield hardware was probably not what guys with muskets had in mind.

Throw in Catholic preschools suing for tax dollars while refusing state nondiscrimination rules on gender and sexuality, and Monday mornings suddenly look manageable.

Nine people in black robes are about to reshape daily American life, and half the country won't even realize it until the alerts pop up next summer.

Honestly the preschool voucher case is the stealth bomb here. The moment public money goes to religious schools with zero accountability, the entire education system is cooked.
