SCOTUS stops Trump and the USPS from turning mail-in voting into a total mess

Original version ·

Looks like the mail-in ballot saga for the midterms is finally calming down thanks to the high court hitting the brakes on some wild new rules.

So, the USPS tried to roll out these bizarre new rules for mail-in voting that basically would have let them bin any ballot that didn't meet their specific design tastes or wasn't on their special list. It was a logistical nightmare waiting to happen.

States and voting groups panicked, obviously. They argued that the Postal Service has no business playing referee in federal elections. The Supreme Court finally stepped in and blocked the whole thing, basically telling the feds that they are likely to lose on the merits because they vastly overstepped their lane.

It is wild that we were even having this conversation two months before the election. The court essentially put a giant 'do not touch' sign on the process for now, leaving everyone to just get on with the actual voting.

Apparently, basic bureaucracy is now a high-stakes constitutional thriller.
