States Ban College IDs at the Ballot Box Because Democracy Is Hard Enough

Original version ·

Getting college kids to vote was already like herding caffeinated cats, but now some states are making sure their campus IDs won't even get them through the door.

Lawmakers in states like Indiana and New Hampshire have decided that student IDs are officially persona non grata at the ballot box.

Apparently, the plastic card that lets someone access campus housing, buy food, check out library books, and access hazardous chemistry labs isn't trustworthy enough to pick a local county commissioner.

Young adults already turn out at the lowest rates of any age bracket, so adding an extra paperwork obstacle was definitely the missing piece of the puzzle. Voting rights groups immediately responded with lawsuits, pointing out that making it harder for younger people to vote is rarely an accident.

A student ID is completely valid to take on tens of thousands of dollars in federal debt, but proving identity at a cardboard voting stall is apparently where the line must be drawn.
