Stars and Stripes journalists sue Pentagon over firing threats
Turns out the government doesn't love it when the military's own paper actually acts like a free press.
So, the Pentagon decided they wanted to fire the leadership at Stars and Stripes. Why? Because the editor-in-chief Erik Slavin and reporter Lara Korte had the audacity to suggest that a newspaper should be independent. Their boss, Max Lederer , was told to axe them, said no, and got the pink slip himself.
It’s a classic case of the people in charge getting grumpy when the news isn't a PR brochure. The paper has been around since the Civil War, but apparently, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth isn't a fan of reading honest reporting about things like crappy living conditions on ships. The crew is now suing to keep their jobs, arguing that being an independent voice is literally the whole point of their mission.
Firing your own journalists for doing their job is certainly a bold strategy for a branch of government that relies on credibility.
