SpaceX Actually Put Starship Into Orbit
Looks like the giant metal beast finally made it to space without turning into a fireball immediately.
So, SpaceX decided it was time to stop testing and actually get Starship into orbit. It launched from Boca Chica, and against all odds, it actually worked. Well, mostly.
One of the Raptor 3 engines decided to take an unscheduled nap on the way up, but the team just shrugged and fired it back up anyway. The rocket successfully deployed a batch of new Starlink satellites, which is basically the whole point of this expensive firework show. The booster tried to come home but got a bit icy and couldn't restart two of its engines, so it had a slightly rougher landing than planned.
It is wild that we are now just casually dropping entire constellations of satellites into space using a rocket the size of a skyscraper. The sheer confidence required to ignore a failing engine mid-flight is probably the most impressive engineering feat of the decade.
