A SpaceX Rocket Just Slammed Into The Moon And Nobody Saw It

Original version ·

Oops, turns out SpaceX left a five-story piece of metal in the wrong neighborhood and now it's a permanent moon resident.

So, a chunk of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket—roughly the size of a five-story building—decided to visit the moon on its own terms this week. It slammed into the lunar surface at over 5,000 mph. Scientists were watching for a flash, but since it happened on the edge of the visible side, it was basically a tree falling in the forest situation.

The rocket piece wasn't supposed to be there. It got caught in a weird tug-of-war between gravity and solar activity after a mission, essentially turning it into extremely expensive space litter. NASA is framing this as a great chance to study impact craters, but it really just highlights how messy our orbital backyard is becoming.

Space travel is cool, but apparently, we still haven't mastered the art of cleaning up after ourselves.

Can we stop calling this a 'scientific opportunity' and just admit we're littering the solar system now?
